Last miles in Europe - 13th January 2009
Still no problems with the car (after about 1300 miles), and we set off on our last leg of the European segment of the rally. Another clear sky, and more clear roads meant the early part of the drive was a cruise. With Granada in the distance but fast approaching, the surrounding scenery was sensational. Our 2 car convoy was making great time as we whizzed through the southern half of Spain.
As we were closing in on the Costa del sol we spotted the first or our future rally buddies. And shot by at 90 miles an hour whilst they were probably doing the more sensible thing of conserving the car, and the fuel consumption. We'll see in the future, but at this stage I'm confident we'll beat them ;-)
We finally arrived at Tarifa, the kite surfing mecca just west of Gibraltar, at about 5pm. An excellent days driving was followed by a fantastic night on mucho cerveza in a local Tarifa bar, breaking the ice with all of our new rally buddies.
Discussions of Paris breakdowns, head gasket blow ups, the bloody French, and desert driving tactics were quite regular as these car bound adventurers swapped horror stories and tips. But the beers flowed (as did the caipirnhas and mohitos) and a good night out was had by all.
